Bhante is the first Ugandan Buddhist monk, one of the first African Buddhist monks, and a pioneer in spreading meditation and Buddhistm in Africa. He took ordination in 2002 under the great Burmese scholar-meditator Sayadaw U Silananda. He then spent eight years studying with the Sri Lankan master Bhante Henepola Gunaratana. In 2005, he founded the Uganda Buddhist Center, where he serves as abbot.
